The Case of the Falling Man

Most of my readers are aware of this story, however, I believe there are still a few out there who may not know about "The Case of the Falling Man".  Therefore, I will give you some IMPORTANT background information to this story before I show you pictures of all that was accomplished this week.

In the 80's my parents decided to add quite a large addition onto my childhood home and the house we now call our home.  A mud room was added downstairs, large patio area was poured outside, and a bathroom and master bedroom was added upstairs (equipped with a beautiful sliding glass window--Over 11ft. in the air-- that would one day lead out onto a glorious deck).

Fast forward about 5 years.

From the road you can see the back of the Fischer house.  However, all you can see is the sliding glass window.  No deck.  A man, we'll call him Joel (or Dad) goes to bed one warm summer evening.  As the night progresses, he sleep walks, opens the screen door and walks right out.  (To this day, I still think he was having a dream that the deck WAS REALLY there!)  My brother wakes to my mom screaming, "Joel, how did you get down there?"  The best part of this story is that he wasn't seriously injured from the fall!  No broken bones, no spinal issues, etc.  Just a bunch of bumps and bruises.

I just happened to be a bible camp the week this happened....so I feel that divine intervention was in play that fateful night and all my prayers I was sending up to God had been answered.  My dad was okay.

Fast forward about 30 years--The Fischer farm has now become the Bersaw Farm

From HWY 9 you can still see the back of the big old farm house.  You can see the sliding glass in all is glory and STILL NO DECK.   Friends, I ask you....What is wrong with this picture?!?!

I don't know why I have a fear of someone I love falling out of that window (hmmm...can you guess?!?!), but, other than the attached garage, this was one item I felt NEEDED to be on my wonderful husbands'  HONEY DO LIST.

And now when you drive by our house on HWY 9, you will still see the sliding glass window, BUT a very important addition has finally joined that lonely window.... a BEAUTIFUL (and according to a great friend of mine--Home and Garden worthy) deck!  Equipped with a small seating area up top--just big enough to fit a couple of chairs and a table--and E I G H T E E N stairs to reach the bottom.

Here are a few pictures from the project.  By the way:  This just happened to be how Paul spent most his vacation time this year.  Thanks, Honey!  Also, a HUGE thank you to Ric Bersaw (Paul's dad) who spent the week with us helping Paul with this huge project and also a few other little ones!

End of Day One & Two--
Lots of discussion time on day one and not really picture worthy
The sliding glass door not looking so lonely anymore.

End of Day 3
Eighteen steps from top to bottom
This was lots of fun for the guys to figure out.
Lots of math and thinking was done from about 9:00 AM until 1:00PM.
This is when the cutting really started to happen!

End of Day 4
Finished product
Paul is planning on adding a baby gate at the bottom so
our little climber isn't tempted to go up and down!

We even got Ric to help cut out the area here (small window)
so Paul could put in the window to get some cross ventilation in our house.

Every generation who has lived in this old farm house has made small changes to it's appearance.

So the moral of this story is:  He who lives in house, shall make it his own.

....and now we will not have to worry about having any more cases of falling men out our bedroom window!
